A Historical Vaporwave Documentary Finally Exists!

Vaporwave, A brief history by Wolfenstein OS X is something I just caught on YouTube and was very happy to see something like this be made.

Even if short, this great little documentary touches back to the roots of the genre with releases like Chuck Persons Eccojams, and Macintosh Plus Floral Shoppe, as well as delves into the concepts and possible meanings behind some of the work being made.

Wolfenstein OS X also address the concerns of some music being made under the blanket genre of Vaporwave seem to be lazily constructed while others do tend to touch on something quite interesting.

This is definitely worth watching and I’m currently trying to get him to come on the podcast to discuss it. If you know Wolfenstein OS X, please let him know he would be a welcome guest!

Vaporwave Fashion

Vaporwave is difficult to describe in full: it is both an aesthetic and a cultural movement that is having a major moment in fashion. Closely related to seapunk, this aesthetic takes cues from cyberpunk and dystopian capitalism and often features Japanese writing, grid motifs, classical sculptures, and 80s and 90s technology.  Recently, certain brands have come to understand its popularity amongst young Internet users and have started to manufacture clothes and bags that emulate the Vaporwave style.

Digging this Vaporwave style? Here is a curated list of some of the best translations of Vaporwave from the Internet to clothing.

Vaporwave is dead….. or is it? Yes it is, but this is still worth watching

Is Vaporwave a real genre of music? A lot of people would say no. A lot of people would say it’s just crappy 90s music slowed down. A lot of it is actually, and and a lot of it does indeed suck horribly. Much of it is just horrible rehashes of the same things over and over again, obvious samples with nothing done to them but slowed down (I’m looking at you Mac Plus) This is one of the reasons I started tuning much of it out of my attention-o-sphere. However, when a video came up called “Vaporwave is dead” I couldn’t resist but to click it. Much to my surprise it was one of the ever so increasingly rare gems that the internet-sub-fake-sudo-genre can produce from time to time. I figured it was worth a share 🙂

Vaporwave may be dead, or was never alive, but this short video is still pretty cool.
